Why a Shower Must Be Tanked Before It's Tiled
A leaking shower rarely fails on the day it's fitted. It fails two or three years later, when months of daily spray have quietly saturated the grout, seeped behind the tiles, and begun to rot the timber floor beneath. The building trade calls the defence against this "tanking" — a continuous, impermeable membrane beneath the tiles — and it is the single most important step in any shower installation. Yet it is also the step most frequently skipped or rushed on budget jobs.
We tank every shower zone with a multi-coat polyurethane membrane, fully bonded at corners, joints, and pipe penetrations, and reinforced with tanking tape at every substrate transition. The membrane runs up the walls to well above the splash line and across the entire floor, directing any moisture that penetrates the grout straight to the drain. Only when the room is genuinely waterproof do we begin tiling — because the tiles are the decoration, and the tanking is the structure that keeps your ceiling and joists dry for decades.
Tiling and Drainage That Performs as Well as It Looks
Shower tiling is a different discipline to tiling a dry wall. Every joint is a potential water path, every grout line must resist mould, and the floor must fall precisely toward the drain without pooling. Large-format porcelain has become the standard because fewer joints mean fewer failure points — but it demands greater accuracy in substrate preparation, adhesive coverage, and cutting.
We laser-level every course, back-butter each large-format tile for full adhesive contact, and mitre the exposed edges for a clean, frameless finish. Floors are set to a calculated fall toward a linear or central drain, with anti-mould epoxy grout that won't stain or harbour bacteria. Colour-matched silicone is applied to a consistent 6mm fillet at every junction — the flexible seal that accommodates the tiny movements every building makes. The result is a shower surface that stays watertight, hygienic, and visually flawless for years.
